End of monument transfer tax exemption

Earlier this year, we reported that in a Policy Decision of 10 June 2009, the State Secretary of Finance had temporarily exempted the acquisition of national monuments from the levy of transfer tax. The State Secretary recently announced that this policy will come to an end on 1 January 2010. From that date, transfer tax will be due on the acquisition of a monument. Kooijman Lambert Notaries has advised its clients, who know that they will become owners of a monument next year, by means of an e-mail alert to have the transfer take place this year. In this way, a tax advantage of, in some cases, many tens of thousands of euros can be realised. To stimulate the restoration and preservation of monuments, there will be a subsidy scheme from the Minister of Education, Culture and Science in 2010. Nothing is known about this subsidy scheme at the moment. If you would like to be kept informed of developments in this area, subscribe to our free digital newsletter.
