From 1 February 2014, new rules will apply to two unmarried AOWs who each have their own rented or owner-occupied house and spend most of their time together in the same dwelling: the two-dwelling rule. It can also involve an AOW person and another unmarried adult.
The two-home rule is subject to a number of conditions. If you meet these conditions, you will receive an AOW pension for unmarried people.
For "informal carers" who already lived with the person they care for before the two-home rule took effect and who each have their own rented or owner-occupied house, nothing will change. For them, the conditions for the two-home rule do not apply. For an AOW person who already received a married person's pension with supplement for a younger partner before 1 February 2014, nothing will change either. The two-dwelling rule will then only be applied on request.
The following conditions apply to the dual residence rule:
- you are unmarried and
- you both have your own rental or owner-occupied house; or a rental house for supported living or group living; or a house based on usufruct or a right in rem for habitation; and
- you are both registered with the municipality at your own address, and
- you pay the full costs and charges for your own home, and
- you can freely dispose of your own home.
