A third-party account (also known as a quality account) is a notary's bank account intended for payments of monies that should not go to the notary. Notaries receive funds belonging to third parties by virtue of their profession, they only manage them, the funds do not become their property. Therefore, notaries are required by law to maintain a third-party account.

The quality account provided for notaries by law ensures that the funds deposited on it remain separate from the notary's office assets. As a result, these funds do not fall a possible bankruptcy of the notary, nor can they be seized.

Before paying any fees due to him that have also been deposited in the quality account, the notary must first check whether the balance of the quality account is sufficient to pay out all third-party funds.
