General law on special medical expenses

The General Act on Exceptional Medical Expenses (AWBZ) is a national insurance scheme that regulated the financing of long-term care for the elderly, chronically ill and disabled. Since January 2015, these schemes have been incorporated into the Long-Term Care Act (Wlz), Social Support Act (Wmo) and Health Insurance Act (Zvw).

You can rely on the Wlz and Wmo when you can no longer adequately care for yourself or your partner, parent or child. This may be the case, for example, if assistance and care are needed due to a condition or a physical, mental or intellectual disability. The Wlz and Wmo then ensures that the necessary care is financed.
To keep care accessible, good and affordable, the government is implementing reforms in the coming years. Much commotion was caused by making the calculation of the own contribution for the Wlz and Wmo partly dependent on assets.

The Wlz and Wmo are undoubtedly one of the most sought-after but also one of the most controversial schemes. Those who depend on them see their care increasingly cut back. Others do not want to be forced to use up their hard-earned savings and seek to reduce their assets so that a high co-payment is not due.
