Certified copy

If you do not want to hand over an original document, such as a diploma, you can have a certified copy made of it. A certified copy is also called a compared copy.
To make a certified copy, the notary will make a photocopy of an original document presented to him. He then confirms with a statement, his signature and official stamp that the copy is actually a copy of the document offered to him and that the content of the copy corresponds to the original.
Official bodies wishing to dispose of the document in question are thus assured that the certified copy is identical to the original document. For use abroad, it is sometimes requested that the certified copy be provided with an apostille or legalised by the relevant embassy.
