An administrator can be appointed in a will, in a gift, but also by the cantonal judge. The administrator makes decisions about the assets of someone placed under administration (that person is also called the beneficiary).

The administrator's task is to manage the assets under the regime. The administrator has to account for his actions to the beneficiary and/or the cantonal judge. Depending on the type of regime established, certain actions require authorisation from the cantonal judge (e.g. making gifts or selling the house).
The administrator can be a natural person but also a legal entity. Since April 2014, special requirements have been imposed by law on professional administrators.
