A deed is a document containing a statement or agreement. Deeds can be divided into different categories, depending on how many parties sign the deed and whether the deed is signed by a notary.

A private deed is a document signed only by one or more parties. An example is the purchase agreement drawn up by the estate agent.

A notarial deed is a document prepared by the notary that is signed by one or more parties as well as by the notary. A notarial deed is recognisable, among other things, by the opening words: "Today appeared before me notary........". Or something to that effect. An example of such a deed is a mortgage deed or a will.

The original of a notarial deed is called the minute deed. This original remains with the notary. A copy of the deed is provided to the notary's signatory(s).

A notarial party deed is signed by one or more parties.

A notarial party deed is a declaration by the notary and is signed only by the notary.

A notarial deed, when a debt is acknowledged by one party to another, also has executory force.
